Fashion advice from Marlene Dietrich herself.

How to Dress (On a budget)
"Here are some basic rules:

Don't ever follow the latest trend, because in a short time you will look ridiculous.
Don't buy green, red or any other flamboyant-colour dress. A small wardrobe must consist of outfits that you can wear again and again.
Therefore, black, navy blue and grey are your favorite colours. Don't buy separates.
Don't believe the sales talk that you can have five dresses for the price of one.
And don't buy cheap materials, no matter how attractive the dress looks to you.
Don't say you can't afford a dress made of expensive materials. Save up for it.
If you have one good suit, preferably grey (navy gets shiny), two black dresses, a black wool skirt, a couple of black and grey sweaters, you'll be well dressed most of the year until summer, when you'll wear simple cotton dresses.
Another suggestion, don't send your clothes to the cleaner's all the time. Spot-clean and press them yourself. It's worth it because they last longer.
And while you're saving up for that good black dress, on your next date wear a black sweater and skirt. Nothing wrong with that as long as you don't ruin the elegance of the outfit by overemphasis of the bosom."

Fashion designer makes light of events in Egypt

Egypt and Cairo is a hot topic for so many right now both liberal and conservative. However, should celebrities and fashion designers use this current crisis as a platform?

This week designer Kenneth Cole sent out the following Tweet.

"Millions are in an uproar in#Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new Spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo"

It was signed KC which implies that it had the go ahead from the designer Kenneth Cole himself. If such a Tweet was found all for fun and meant to be lighthearted why issue an apology? Apparently one was needed because soon after this was sent out via the same account:

"RE Egypt Tweet: We weren't intending to make light of a serious situation. We understand the sensitivity to of this historic moment."

Despite their best efforts what was said or Tweeted was sent out there and can not easily be taken back. With Twitter there is only delete there is no "Undo".

Belcourt Theatre hosting competition for new Fashion Designer for nD Festival

Think you have what it takes to be Nashville’s next up and coming fashion designer?  If so, the reward will be big! The Belcourt Theatre just announced they will be holding a design competition to find Nashville’s next promising designer.
The challenge?
Competitors will design one full look inspired by the truly Americana “road movie” (think “Fear and Loathing” or “Easy Rider”). The winner will go on to create 10 complete looks that will be featured along side visiting national designers at the nD Festival fashion show at the Belcourt Theatre in the fall of 2011. A stipend will go toward production of the collection and other prizes will be awarded such as mentoring sessions with nationally known designers Carrie and Matt Eddmenson of Imogene+Willie and Natalie Chanin ofAlabama Chanin . Additionally, a Nashville independent filmmaker will incorporate the nD Emerging Designer’s winning looks into a short film that will screen during the nD Festival fashion show.
Among an expert panel of judges will be Laura Brown of Harper’s Bazaar magazine and the local favorite Imogene+Willie. Imogene+Willie were the featured designers in last years nD festival fashion show.

Be sure to check back to www.belcourt.org next week on January 28th for full details, instructions and the complete application process.

The nD festival is a fundraising event for The Belcourt Theatre. Co-chairs for the event are Holly Bryant and Libby Callaway. Last year the highly attended festival raised $30,000+ for the Nashville theatre, which provided new seating. The Belcourt is Nashville’s last historic neighborhood theatre. It is a nonprofit organization that is renowned for showcasing the best of independent, documentary, and world cinema films and has been a sounding board for independent voices in theatre and music.

The Birds Nest Salon, Murfreesboro,Tn

What would get me to drive 70 miles for a hair cut?
This?
Well, yes. But mostly...
This
The Birds Nest Salon is the brain-child of Shannon Perry-Rawls. Its a private salon suite that was started in June 2010. Shannon is such a talented and upcoming hair and make up stylist I knew I had to get in on her client list early on before she takes Nashville and the surrounding area by storm!
She is the stylist for runway shows and model shoots, weddings and private photo shoots as well.
Her services extend from a cut to all over color or glaze. She even offers the one thing celebrities are going wild over right now, Brazilian Blow Outs.
Shannon really knows her products and has the art of hair dye down to a Science. I learned that I am a closer to being a blonde than I am a brunette!
I was equally impressed with her product line which included CHI ammonia free hair dye and Pravana shampoo and conditioner. All of which are so pure and organic that they give off very little smell at all but the result is full of shine and softness.
We'll call this my before shot:

And here are a few of the after

The color she used was a chocolate mousse color along with a glaze. The finished color looks so completely natural!
And last but not least, here I am with the tiny firecracker herself Shannon Perry-Rawls

Be sure to check out her site and call for your next appointment or event!

Kissably smooth

Since the weather has been biter cold and snowy I have maintained smooth, soft lips with my new favorite lip balm:

$10, philosophy

I currently have the Cherry flavor and I love how it glides on my lips without being caked on. It also doesn't rub off quickly either so it leaves a soft gloss to your lips all while protecting them from the cool night air!

Another great thing about philosophy is their products are formulated with only scientifically-proven, medically-accepted ingredients and technologies, and are overseen by doctors and scientists to ensure the highest of quality.

Nashville on my mind.

Nashville, Tn has been gaining major attention lately! The "hip kids" have moved in and are really shaking up the place and flipping a town that was in serious need of a make over.

Nashville (to me) has always been "the big city" it was the place where we went every year to see the fireworks, and play in the fountains in the Bicentennial Mall on a hot summer day. I was a regular ticket holder at the Repertory theatre, and had countless memories at the old Opryland theme park.

A few years ago when my husband began playing more gigs down along Elliston Place I began to see a new light beginning to shine around town. Nashville was beginning to compete with its trendier, more "experienced" sister cities across the nation and fashion magazines are taking notice.

Back in September Nylon Magazine made a sweep through town, this Fall it was announced that there would be a Lexus sponsored fashion week in April 2011.(Stay with Nashville Fashion Events.com for more on this) And during the holidays Elle.com posted this lovely article on their featuring a blog post from Gwyneth Paltrow on her love for Nashville during her recent stay while filming the movie Country Strong.
It just so happens that some of my Nashville favorites are on the list. The marvelous Ms. Libby Callaway's store Diamond Star Halo inside of Fanny's House of Music is a warm, visual delight! With shades of gold and lit with lamps, it feels so inviting that I took my time looking around at each of the hand picked clothing pieces and jewelry. Just one glimpse at her blog and you can see for yourself this woman brings a unique charm to the East Nashville area.
Katy K's and Imogene+Willie is the present and future of Nashville, and I was so glad to see them on the "list".

Elle.com inspired me to make my own "it-list" of my favorite places around town. Enjoy!

Roberts Western World for true Nashville 'Honky Tonkin'

Closet Case Vintage (inside Katy K's) for great quality vintage clothes

Green Hills shopping area: for Trader Joe's and high fashion shopping!

The Station Inn: an intimate setting for hearing great music

Elders Bookstore: Great place to find older, first edition books, or to just stand in awe, and run your fingertips over all the old covers of books.

And coming soon! (and very excited about!)Mike Wolfe of History Channel's American Pickers will be opening an antique store in the huge, former car factory Marathon Village in North Nashville in April! I've loved this show since episode one and can't wait to have some of the amazing picks from across the country, practically at my back door! (read more about it here)
