Black Friday Survival Guide

Shopping Black Friday always reminds me of a scene out of George Romaro's Dawn of the Dead. Hundreds of shoppers staggering toward a department store mumbleling unreconizable words and bumping into those around them until they lock eyes upon a desired item, then the thrashing and knawing begins. So just in time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, I bring to you your official 'Black Friday Survival Guide'
Black Friday is a Fashionista’s Super Bowl. This non-traditional holiday is our day! It’s the biggest shopping day of the year and you have to be ready for it! Take a moment and read over this “Black Friday Survival Guide” for a safe and effective shopping spree.

Step One: Caffeine. You will need lots of stamina

Step Two: Have a game plan! Know which stores you’re going to, what is sold where and for how much. Write down your list in the order of which stores opens first and know the quickest route there. Know side streets too! Traffic may be a problem.

Step Three: Wear comfortable shoes! This is not the time to be cute. You may have to run for your life.

Step Four: Travel light. No need for a large purse. You will need to make yourself as small as possible in order to slide in between the masses.

Step Five: Don’t trip and fall. You could be buried alive.

Step Six:  Don’t stop to text your sister about how many Prada bags are left. Grab a quick picture if you must, but keep moving!

Step Seven: Elbows. This is your best defense!

Step Eight: Lock and Load. When you reach your desired sale item, grab and tuck! Keep the item close to your body then move to safety.

Step Nine: Retreat to the exit as quickly as possible.  Regroup. Take deep breaths. There’s more shopping to do!

Step Ten: Repeat steps 1-9.

Remember! You’re dealing with caffeine impregnated, shopping zombies, who are still coming down from a tryptophan buzz and they.don’t.like.you! Politeness is always my philosophy and I don’t think it necessarily needs to be thrown out the window in circumstances such as these. Just stay focused on the goal ahead of you, get in and get out, with as little contact as possible.

God speed.

And be sure to check out more zombie shopping fun at Sears! Compleate with a Zombie gift guide for that hard to shop for Zombie on your list, Zombie Friend maker, and the Undead Twitter feed. You can even switch the language to Zombian to make shopping more convienant for you!

Black Friday!

It seems that most retail stores are being very tight lipped about their sales. With some lists being published Thanksgiving Day. Target will start their online sales a couple hours before their door buster sales. Toys R Us will open their doors at 10pm on TG night. As well as having a 50% off 2 day sale today starting at 3pm-12 and tomorrow starting at 7am-1pm. As far as online shopping goes Amazon seems to be the online site to go to on Black Friday morning if you wish to shop at home. They will be honoring most dealers Black Friday specials straight from their site!

Remember its still not too late to get in on the give away here on this blog! Share this post on Facebook and Twitter and either tag me in it or then e-mail me here to let me know you passed it on and your name will be entered in the drawing for a Black Friday survival gift! You have until this Sunday!

Today's Special:Leg Warmers

With the cooler days now upon us if you are looking to stand out from all the rest who are wearing tights and leggings, why not try leg warmers?
For years leg warmers have been synonymous with dancers. Long, lean muscular girls with firm calves and flat abs have used leg warmers to...well I'm not really sure the reason for why they wear leg warmers as I have never been one of "those girls". So, how about I give you all the reasons I have recently started wearing them for myself:
  • Necessity: Its cold
  • My distaste for socks: I hate having my feet hot and confined
  • Comfort: They did take some getting used to, but once I did, they have never left my legs
And finally:
  • Style: Of course!
I would first only wear my leg warmers around the house. Then all it took was one cold 'Girls Night Out' for me to slip those suckers on and hit the town! I wore them over my dark denim shredded jeans and a long sweater and flats. Next, for a more casual look I wore them while traveling to St. Louis. I paired them with thin gray sweats, a long cotton cardigan over white tank top and slouch hat and purple tennis shoes.

They can be dressed up I suppose, with a mini skirt and heels, but I would really only recommend that for the 21 and under crowd, for such things are expected of that group.

Then of course there's the classic leg warmers look over thick tights, short shorts, cropped sweater, over a tank top. But if you went there, then you should also probably find a neon colored head band and some bangles....maybe even some blue eye shadow.

Now, of course I wouldn't share my love of leg warmers with you with out showing you where you can go and find your own. And of course I would send you no where else except to Etsy!

Now? Are you still skeptical?

What's on your arms?

While this blog is typically about clothes and fashion I think its important to also address issues involving women (and men) in our society today. Blogger offers the chance to host a charity organization on their page. After looking over the list, I knew imediantly that I wanted to give spotlight to the organization
To Write Love on Her Arms
a non profit movement dedicated to bringing hope to those suffering from depression, addiction and self injury
You can click on the Social Vibe button to the right to find out more about how you can help. Or by visiting TWLOHA site for the full story about 19 year old Renee and her journey through addiction.
Here are the facts:
121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. (World Health Organization
Depression often co-occurs with anxiety disorders and
 substance abuse,
with 30 percent of teens with depression also developing a substance abuse problem. (NIMH
2/3 of those suffering
from depression
 never seek treatment

Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers. (NIMH)

If you are reading this post and are going through depression or addiction, please stop reading now and go talk to someone. Anyone.
If you have never expierianced this for yourself, chances are you probably know someone who has. Be there for them to talk to you.
There is such a bigger world outside of ourselves and what we have on. Either take the time today to donate to the charity mentioned here or donate your time to one near you.
Then...Pass it on.

Redefining how we see beautiful.

There's a new trend working its away across the nation, via t.v news sites and blogs. That trend is one of self worth. Media bombards us with ideas of body image. One would think from the outside looking in that we as a nation that is so obsessed with reality t.v shows about staying fit and working out and appearance that we would also be happier with ourselves and who we are.

However, if you talk to young women and older alike you are sure to hear insecurities and discrepancies about themselves. But! There are whispers of, grass-root movements even of women taking a stand to tell each other:
You are beautiful!

  • Last year, a young author Jenna Lucado released a book called Redefining {beau.tif.ful} encouraging teenage girls to look within and redefine what they see as beautiful and find the self worth to see themselves as they truly are.
  • Skip forward to this morning on "CBS The Early Show" a growing group of teenage girls from Colleyville, Texas shared how they have formed a new club at school called 'Redefining beautiful'. Every Tuesday these girls leave the make up at home and present themselves to their peers at school with no make up on. It has made such an impact that there is even a male support group at their school embracing the idea of natural beauty in girls. So where do these young trend setters get their inspiration from?
  • Operation Beautiful. This blog site was launched in June 2009. Its mission is to end negative self talk. The followers of this movement have been known to post sticky notes and pieces of paper on mirrors, bus stops and bathroom stalls to encourage another woman with words like "You're AMAZING!" "You're UNIQUE!" "YOU ARE WORTH IT!"
All of the above may seem like small steps but they are most defiantly steps in the right direction. Blogs (such as this one) are meant for fun, and entertainment. I hope that just by posting this message today that it will inspire you to take what you have read above and make it your own and get out there and inspire another teen, or mother, or friend to do the same. Because, clothes and fashion and make-up are all okay to enjoy and express yourself through. But! If you don't love who you are underneath it all, then all it is, is a mask.

Be you.

Be the talk of the car pool.

Heidi Klum has teamed up with New Balance and Amazon.com to showcase her new active wear, for moms?

On Thursday night's episode of Project Runway where Klum is a lead judge the designers were given a challenge to create an active wear look for Heidi's Active wear line on Amazon.com the winner would get to display their winning design for the public to buy. Under careful scrutiny by Klum the designers completed the challenge with designer Andy not only winning but getting to display all 3 of his designs in the line.

It was mentioned several times throughout the episode Thursday that these clothes had to wearable by Moms. Klum is a mother of four and understands why style must also meet with comfort and wear ablity. The clothes, sizes x-small to x-large, are defiantly on the high end of prices but once you check out this collection you may want to add one or more pieces to your splurge list.

Book Review: The Little Black Book of Style : Nina Garcia

In 2007 Nina Garcia's The Little Black Book of Style hit the stores. Since then women across the country have edited down theirr wardrobe, bought with drama and are always properly dressed for the occasion. At least that is, those women who have read her book!

In this easy to read book on style Garcia speaks to you like a Girlfriend would over coffee. Only this girlfriend is the fashion director at Elle magazine and serves on the judging panel of Lifetime's Thursday night show Project Runway.

Nina sets the mood when each chapter opens with quotes such as:
Fashion fades,style is eternal--Coco Chanel
Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.--Bette Midler
or my favorite:
The more you know, the less you need.--Aboriginal saying

With simple step by step chapters and darling illustrations by Ruben Toledo you are shown how to Be your own muse, The Basics, Inspirations, What to wear when, Insider tips and tricks, Fashion cliff's notes Decade by Decade and closing remarks where Garcia speaks to you on a personal level and encourages the reader to most importantly:
"Find out who you are and who you want to be in the world. I hope you choose to be fabulous, daring, fun, inspired, and yourself."

I keep this book on my vanity stand so that it is always with in reach when getting dressed to go out. The Little Black Book of Style is more than just a bedside handbook though, it is a book that encourages and inspires the reader to become the best version of themselves and to embrace who they are on the inside.

Guilty?

Something to think about before heading out to the mall this weekend:

I may be going out on a limb here, however I think most of us women would not be happy to find our boyfriend or husband looking at pornography. But do you realize that according to researchers from the University of Westminster in London YOU are just as guilty?
In a study ran in the New York Post women were hooked up to eye tracking devices and shown pornographic images. They tracked their response then showed them sale clippings from the local super market and their brain reacted the same way!

Project Runway Recap.

Spoiler Alert!
Challenge: "Create your own take on Classic American sports wear with Jacqueline Kennedy as your muse"
$300 budget.
GO!
The designers went confidently into the challenge with very little drama but as always a few with questionable style choices.
Michael D created a Milk made design "Crucible" look with a high waisted skirt that ended up a bit too short on the runway and packed on inches onto his models waist. Ivy rushed to the last minuet without even fitting it to her model. Good news: They had an extra day before sending it to the runway. Bad news: They now had to add outerwear to the look.
It wouldn't be PR without a bit of trash talk. Michael Costello was under the bus again with his Donna Karen knock off. And Valerie struggled with commitment in her design.
As always it all comes together on the runway. Ivy's pants suit was fabulous. With wide trousers, sleeveless blouse with an open neck line and light blouse grey overcoat, and round rimmed glasses. Gretchen was more camel color fabric and somewhat forgettable but safe. Valerie's "mall wear" was anything but Jackie O and Mondo worked it out with a purple hounds tooth skirt, paired with a black and white striped top under a short black purple lined jacket. Not to be out shined by his own personal wardrobe choice of black, tiny, boy short-shorts with suspenders.
Judges comments:
Michael Costello
April
Gretchen
SAFE
Valerie: "You made a jacket under a jacket!"(Heidi) "Simple doesn't have to mean boring. You missed the mark."(Kors) "That black Lycra skirt was a mistake!" (Garcia)
Christopher: Was Guest Judge January Jones' favorite "You draped your model with a dirty rag" (Heidi)
Michael Drummond: "Your outfit is skitsofrenic Jackie O" (Kors)
Andy: completely ripped open by judges on his slouchy crotch pants. Poorly designed "Laughable" (Heidi)
January Jones: Its not American Sportswear
Andy: "Well, what really is American sports wear?"
Michael Kors: "I'm sorry are you now a Grand Couturier? Did I miss something?"
Highest Score:
 Mondo (followed by)
Cristopher, Ivy, and Andy
Bottom Two:
Valerie and Michael Drummond
OUT:
Michael Drummond.

Favorite Gunnism:(to Andy about his pants design)
"Jackie Kennedy would not wear camel toe."

Next time on Project Runway: Tim announces a project with an unprecedented prize!

Old Navy: Sinking ship?

Via Facebook tonight Old Navy seemed excited to present to their Fans their Fall Sneak Peak. However, it seemed to face more opposition than acceptance.

Jennifer: I really don't want to look like a grandma, thanks. (two thumbs up)
Ivy:To be honest I think they look gaudy.. nothing matches.
Danielle: I used to be a weekly shopper but ever since their style of clothes have changed to ugly I barely go there anymore. (1 thumbs up)
Beth  I am so glad I am not the only one who has trouble shopping at ON lately. I am not exactly overweight, but I would NEVER wear most of the clothes that are "in style" this fall.
Valarie: YOU NEED A NEW STYLIST OLD NAVY... simple as that (3 thumbs up) ouch!

Here's just one example from the collection. This piece seemed to carry the over all opinion of "Grandma attire".

The color scheme looks great I love the shift from the typically looks of Fall especially the bright white cardigan. Perhaps, Old Navy missed the mark on this one? Check out the posted collection here and judge for yourself. What will you be wearing?

On Trend Fall 2010

This Fall the looks that are trending are a mix of a few different eras and enough textures to over stimulate your senses. From 50's retro to 80's studded rocker you can find loud prints, harsh plaids and smooth, cool leather and someone better call PETA because designers are clearing out Granny's attic of its FUR!
Before you throw up your hands and retort back to your reliable safe basics take a moment and brush up on a few simple style rules that will at best keep you just enough "in the know" for this Season and you'll be just fine.

Clean Lines!  No matter which concept you choose to follow when shopping one thing that you will find in each collection is clean lines. Just because you will be adding layers onto your wardrobe doesn't mean you have to be frumpy. Think sleek, think greys and think fitted. What I love about that look is that it only makes you look your best. When you buy clothes that are fitted and tailored (if you don't have a tailor yet, STOP. open the yellow pages) then you appear thinner and taller. Not to mention more professional and pulled together.

Browse with through a few key pieces that you can work into your closet now and if you shop smart and choose the right colors you can mix and match these looks until Spring!

This Lauren Conrad skirt can be found at Kohls for 17.60 (as of Sept.1st) I love this vintage inspired piece. You can take a look like this from day into evening with just a simple shoe change. *BOLD ALERT* taint your lips with classic red lip stick to complete this look.
While we are on the subject of shoes imagine your ladies slipping into these Mossimo Ballet Flats at Target for only 9.80! Shoes are the one area you can take a risk in. They are not always the first thing people notice so its safe. Or! If you work behind a desk it can be your own guilty pleasure. Perhaps you are a bit timid about wrapping yourself in cheetah skin? Pair a fun zebra flat with a sleek modern look for the office and you are bound to get compliments.

Here is another piece from Kohls. This pleated ruffle shirt is from the Elle collection and its a bit of a gem for $28.00 Once again you will see the clean lines and the waist minimizer belt. This shirt has many options pair it with a pencil skirt, to a tapered trouser or even dark denim Capri's for the weekend. The cut neckline also allows you to showcase a simple necklace.

A simple trench coat is a a must staple for cooler weather. You can work in a Seasonal trend to this piece by choosing this Plaid Merona water repellent trench coat from Target for $50.00

Fellas! I didn't leave you out of this equation, I found these wool suit pants by Chaps for only $16.00 at Kohls

I couldn't get the picture to load, but I found lots of great deals for this Fall at Macy's including these Plus Size JM Collection Capri pants for $19.99 the sizes for these pants go up to  a size 18. And my favorite part about them is the fabulous buckle belt.

And last by not least:

A military inspired sleeveless black dress from Charlotte Russe for $26.00 Wear this under your trench or slip a bolero jacket over this dress to knock off the chill. Your shoe choices are also pretty endless with this dress as well.

That should get you started. Great fashion is out there and it doesn't have to be expensive!
